Hungarian Vizsla is Best in Show
15 March 2010

The four-day Crufts dog show at Birmingham saw a Hungarian Vizsla win the Best in Show title.

Seven-year-old Yogi, who belongs to John Thirlwell , from Carlisle, Cumbria, won the prize against six other dogs competing at the show held in the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

A Scottish Terrier from Russia, named Rico, came second.

Yogi had also won the Gundog group in the show, and is the first Hungarian Vizsla to receive this honour.

Yogi's handler John Thirlwell said: "He is just such a wonderful dog, I am just pleased that he stood up to it." He added that he was likely to retire after this success.

Judge Valerie Foss said of the dog: "He is such a lovely mover, so powerful, so free."

This year's Best in Show competition had over 22,000 entries across 187 breeds, the Kennel Club said.

The number was reduced to just seven in their individual categories during the course of the four-day contest, and the finals of Sunday night brought forward Yogi's success.

In the past 79 years, over 40 breeds have been awarded the Crufts Best in Show prize.
